So Ubuntu 8.04 is finally released (as of 24th of April, 2008). Do we like it or what? :D Personally I think that Ubuntu is much better than Vista when it comes to reliable runtime software that will keep working. And don't get me started on Vista drivers :x . It is also easy to use, which is unusual for Linux. The only problem is that as Linux, Ubuntu only supports open source software, which doesn't include all the software that Microsoft has forced us to use in Windows. Naturally, there are alternative open source software packages out there for most of the commercial ones. OpenOffice.org is a good example. But unfortunately, software that is vital for the design industry, along with many other areas of IT, struggle to find a good alternative, if any. Adobe Photoshop for example, is by far the best image editing software package around. GIMP is the open source alternative. Although it has many features, it is difficult to get used to the user interface. Adobe Flash, which I use nearly every day, is not supported on Linux. But even so, a dual boot option is optimal - this way it is possible to experience the best of both worlds. 10/10 for Ubuntu 8.10! Perhaps one day open source software will dominate the computer industry and we will see a new age in computing, where piracy is impossible, and everyone was the ability to create, innovate and explore.

Until 3DS Max, Fusion, Photoshop, etc. support Linux....I can't switch to Jack Schitt.

btw...about a month ago, I heard that Google is funding the porting of Photoshop from pc/mac to linux. So yeah, in a while, there will be Photoshop (not to mention the whole Creative Suite) for Linux.

I'll stick with PC for now. I enjoy the occasional blue-screen-of-death and the corrupted file errors. :)

That's great news if the Creative Suite will be available for Linux. If this happens, then I will have no reason not to get rid of Windows. I hope it happens soon. Still, Ubuntu 8.04 is worth trying. Now you can just install inside Windows like any other program!

I have been a windows user almost my entire life but now trying ubuntu can't go back and have been using it for about 3 months now.

Only problem is some of the games I play doesn't work in ubuntu so I have to dual boot ubuntu with windows XP pro.

With Ubuntu, and many other Linux distributions, you can use the install CD to try all of Ubuntu's features before you install, this is called a Live CD. Then, you have the option of installing alongside windows or using the whole disc. You can resize the windows partition to make room for Ubuntu. When you restart, you get a GRUB menu and you can choose which one you want - Windows or Ubuntu. If you don't want to install Ubuntu, then you just remove the Live CD and your computer will not be affected. This is one of Linux's biggest features. Whenever I have a virus on my computer, I just boot into Ubuntu and get rid of it.

The Ubuntu Live CD is a lot like Boot camp, except you don't have to install it, unless you want to :D.
Of course, if you use the Live CD every time, it will not save any settings, but that's ok if you only use it occasionally.

I urge you all to at least try using the Live CD. You can download Ubuntu 8.04 for free here:

If you want a cool looking desktop then you can install Compiz-Fusion in Ubuntu and get effects like this:

They are out of this world - much better than Aero or Aqua. :)

^ lolz I have the same skin on my second desktop...

But it's not the same, dude, trust me.

OSX is more fluid and if you use it for 2 straight months you wouldn't want to go back to the archaic Windows (Vista or XP). I'm just glad Adobe stuff is on OSX :D

I've used osx before. And I'm not ashamed to say, I loved it. But, since Max will probably never be compatible with it, I can't see myself getting a Mac in the near future.
